Postcards became popular at the turn of the 20th century for sending quick, short messages to friends and relatives. From the beginning, with their picture covers, they became popular collector’s items, a trend that continues to this day. As with any fad, many gimmicks emerged to try to get in on the profits, and to add variety to the new hobby. Leather postcards were one of those gimmicks. Instead of pretty landscapes and grand buildings, leather postcards often boasted jokes, caricatures, or comics that were hand painted or embossed on the letter. This is a fine collection of postcards all dating from roughly the same period, including some with their original 2 cent stamps.
